Prison Jokeby John P.
A new convict arrives in prison, and he‘s sitting in his cell with his new cell mate. Suddenly someone yells “243” and the whole cellblock starts laughing. A little while later someone yells, “23” and again everyone starts laughing. This happens every day between 2pm and 3pm.
The new guy has no idea what is going on, so he asks his cell mate, “what’s so funny”? The cell mate goes on to explain, “There is only one book in the prison, and it’s a joke book. We‘ve all read it so many times that we’ve memorized the jokes. So now, we only have to hear the numbers.”
So, the new guy goes to the library and studies the book. After a couple of weeks he’s ready… Two o‘clock rolls around and someone yells, “119”. The whole cellblock erupts in laughter. The new guy yells “198”. There is dead silence.
He asks his cell mate what happened? The cell mate replies, “Some people can tell a joke, and some people can’t.”

OpenCampOne Week Till OpenCamp! Here’s a Little Video…by John P.
Well, we’re a week away from OpenCamp. Love it or hate it, OpenCamp has definitely impacted my ability to publish to my own blog. I‘m looking forward to being done with all of that for a while so I can focus on my own projects again.
That is not to say that I am not finding OpenCamp to be an incredibally rewarding experience! It’s definitely worth every minute spent on it! I’ve made lots of close friends and had amazing experiences already. And I know that OpenCamp will change some people‘s lives!
We have a lot of interesting stuff going on, and one of those things is that Dr. Nico Martini’s students from UTD will be attending OpenCamp as a mandatory part of class! So for a little fun Cali and I put this video together for them. Though everyone might get a kick out of it…

ReviewsReview: How I Quit Smoking with Green Smoke Electronic Cigarettesby Elie Khoury
As I‘m writing this post, I’m celebrating the 2nd month of my new healthy lifestyle. I had been a smoker for about 8 years, and I smoked an average of 20 cigarettes per day. The longest I was able to quit smoking was less than 48 hours, which means I was never able to not smoke for even 2 days in a row!
Improved Quality of LifeGuess what! it‘s been 8 weeks and I haven’t smoked a cigarette! And what’s even better is that I don’t even feel like smoking at all! This has improved my life dramatically in a number of areas:
I‘m sleeping much better and waking up pretty active. Since I’m breathing so much better at night, I no longer wake up wishing for more sleep. My breath no longer smells bad! I used to avoid chatting with people 10 to 20 minutes after every cigarette, especially when I visit the United States. Many people are allergic to smoke, and passive smoke can still seriously bother some people (just the residual smoke in your lungs after having a cigarette).I’m saving $6 every day! That’s around $2,200 per year. I can spend a week in Las Vegas instead of buying cigarettes! I can’t believe I spent around $20,000 on cigarettes my entire life!! And was willing to spend more…[Click here to read more…]

BladesmithingHow to Professionally Sharpen a Knifeby John P.
One of my readers (Kirk) wrote in with the following question:
I have just purchased the whole set of Katana knives plus a few extra to fill the block. My question is, how the heck do you use that steel properly to keep them as sharp as they were out of the box? Is that even possible? I have ran several of them on the steel at the recomended 22 degrees and it seems to change the edge. Don???t get me wrong, they are still very sharp, but they don???t pop hairs off my arm as they did right out of the box.
Great question Kirk, and I‘ve got a rather complex answer for you. As far as sharpening the Katana knives – or any other knife for that matter – you need to know that, just like everything else on Earth, there are varying degrees of cost associated with higher levels of performance. So, I’m going to give you a ton of information here, and you can then make a decision as to which way to go based on your budget and willingness to put in some elbow grease.

EnvironmentIs the Water Powered Car Too Good to be True?by John P.
Is a Water powered automobile too good to be true? Well, not according to Japanese company Genepax. They claim to have built a car that runs on water and air alone.
The system can generate power just by supplying water and air to the fuel and air electrodes, respectively, the company said at the press conference, which took place June 12, 2008, at the Osaka Assembly Hall.
The basic power generation mechanism of the new system is similar to that of a normal fuel cell, which uses hydrogen as a fuel. According to Genepax, the main feature of the new system is that it uses the company‘s membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which contains a material capable of breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen through a chemical reaction.
Though the company did not reveal the details, it “succeeded in adopting a well-known process to produce hydrogen from water to the MEA,” said Hirasawa Kiyoshi, the company’s president. This process is allegedly similar to the mechanism that produces hydrogen by a reaction of metal hydride and water. But compared with the existing method, the new process is expected to produce hydrogen from water for longer time, the company said.
With the new process, the cell needs only water and air, eliminating the need for a hydrogen reformer and high-pressure hydrogen tank. Moreover, the MEA requires no special catalysts, and the required amount of rare metals such as platinum is almost the same as that of existing systems, Genepax said.
